Comments:I have used lots of your lessons in our Sunday School and VBS- thank you! Wanted to let you know of a lesson we did recently based in an experiment on the news by Steve Spangler. We were talking about Daniel and his friends not eating the King's food and only putting the food God had told them it was okay to eat. So we expanded that to talk about good things God wanted us to put into our heads and bodies. We used a styrofoam head (about $4 on Amazon) and carved out a hole for a glass beaker filled with acetone. We then cut long thin strips of styrofoam and wrote on them (good things God wants us to think about...bible verses, prayer, etc. as well as bad things we might not want to put into our heads ). Then we fed the styrofoam strips into the hidden acetone which instantly dissolved the styrofoam). The kids were excited and yelled out which things should go into our heads and which things shouldn't and it worked really well with that Daniel story, too.

Comments:I recently did Lesson One (One Sin) and practiced putting the balloon through the candle at home. Worked perfectly. Then I did it at church. Not so perfectly. As I'm building the suspense with the water filled balloon...it pops. Apparently, after practicing the night before, the wick was bent sideways after being burnt and the flame burned in a horizontal manner and popped my supposed-to-be-invincible Spirit-filled balloon. I made an on the fly explanation and said, "Wow! Look at that! The Living Water extinguishes the power of sin!!!"

Comments:I wanted to tell you thank you for the work you have done by putting this web site together and the work involved with the lesson and experiments. God had led my family to a childrens ministry in a small town next to ours. I asked God what I could do to serve him and he told me to "feed the children of Newell". God has provided a building fully equipt with a kitchen, next to a playground. We feed 20-40 kids each week on Sundays and our second year started this spring and I am doing a bible lesson. I just found this web site this week and will do the first lesson on Sunday ( the water fire balloon). Trying to keep the kids from running to the playground because their bored is hard so this web site will be a blessing. I just thought I would let you know how your willingness to place this ministry on the internet for free is going to introduce Jesus to some who don't know him and help teach lessons to those who have and idea of who Jesus is. Comments:We used the "This little light of mine" last Sunday. The kids were fascinated by it and grasped that if they don't do things to keep their "light" burning, it will diminish and darkness will enter in. The lesson I prepared was "Jesus, Light of the World" and for one of the games, I gave them each a flashlight and had them line up on a masking tape line and if the other teacher or I shouted something that keeps their light burning, they had to turn on their flashlights and jump to their right. If we shouted something that would diminish their light, they had to turn them off and jump to their left. We had them practice jumping to the right and turning their lights on and jumping to the left and turning them off beforehand. The other game was dividing them into two teams and I gave each team a string of lights to untangle. The first team to finish won. We sang "This Little Light of Mine". The candle demo truly cemented the idea that praying, reading the Bible, being kind, etc...

Comments:Daniel, After reading several of your pages on science and religion I have decided to write and ask you a couple of honest questions. By the look of your education and current job in medical research, you are more-than-likely a smart dude. You're not a raving fundamentalist... however, you do seem to wholeheartedly believe in the word of the Christian Bible. Why are you a Christian and *not* a Muslim? Was it because you were born and raised in a predominantly-Christian country? In my youth, I was raised to believe that all other religions (including competing Christian sects) were false religions. Do you believe this as well? I ask because I honestly believe that you and I would be Muslims if we had been born in Yemen. (CIA World Factbook claims that 95+ percentage are Muslim) So did you choose your religion or did your birthplace choose it? I don't tell anyone that they're wrong in their beliefs... but seeing as most religions contradict each other... only ONE religion

Comments:I just wanted to drop a few lines to share my story with you. A few months ago a co-worker and I were directed by our church to take on a challenging class full of very energetic children. For the first couple of months I dreaded working. Then one night a little boy tugged at my heart strings and I knew then the Lord put us on a mission. After continuous prayer I came across your site. Upon reading some of the lessons I was taken back to my own childhood memories in VBS and every story I could remember told was coupled with a scientific experiment. Which made me realize I didn't come across your site by accident. I asked my coordinator if she would allow us to make our own curriculum for this particular class in order to attempt to reach these children. She granted my partner and I permission and together we are oohing/awwing our entire class every week. Thank you so much for your wonderful inspiration!! Comments:I have recently been asked to do the children's sermon (about 10 minutes) at my church. I'm also a teacher so I thought it might be fun to incorporate science. My first lesson was one on magnets and like/unlike poles and sin coming between us & God and/or drawing closer to God. I found it on the Internet and there's more to it then that. Right now I'm working on a lesson on a bumblebee. I have a book called Buzzy the Bumblebee. He reads a lot and he read that bumblebees aren't suppose to fly because of their wing span. He begins to doubt and can't fly. At the end his parents tell him that the reason he can't fly anymore is because he stopped believing. You could maybe write a lesson about bumblebees and an experiment or object that relates this belief that with Christ all things are possible.

We havent have had a turn out in years and have focused on our jr. church class and youth group which is growing every year. We have just lost our adult sunday school class so we are hoping this will bring everyone out. I wanted something different than our jr. church classroom bible lesson & craft. I have done a science lab at vacation bible school before, so I thought id look and see if there was something out there like that to teach. I found your site and Im very excised to get started. Its simple experiments but have a great lesson with it. I love how you have everything laid out for it, from start to finish. Keep up the great work. I know the kids will love it.

You have to cut one of the poer wires on the extension cord bare and seperate the two pieces of wire place in water so they do not touch I added sugar to water to prove point that we were not called to only be sweet christians sometimes we must do the hard things. Add salt to water it will complete circut and light up bulb. It is pretty cool and kids of all ages love it

I think you do have a very special gift, not with just science, but with teaching. Thanks for your lessons. I'm not sure if you are still posting new Lessons. I hope so. I find your site to be a great resource. I like the simpler experiments best because I can't always find the materials needed for the more complex ones and because, I have to admit, I procrastinate and I'm surfing for suggestions to enhance my lesson just before church. Today I am going to use your lesson even though I don't have the materials for the experiment (the one about gifts). Well said. Keep up the good work.

I am teaching this Sunday at the Sunday School about David and Goliath and I'm going to use your idea in lesson 2 using the Mentos candy and the Coke. I just drilled the holes in Mentos candys and wanted to tell you that using the pricker makes it easier. I easly made holes in 5 candys and none of them got cracked. This way you can save candys and not use the drill with bits and the pliers. Thank you again, you're making great job for God's kingdom. I recently saw an experiment done and immediately I formed a Bible truth to it, I have been coming uo with this type of object lesson for 20 years and it is great to have fresh ideas... you take a flask type beaker...something with a smaller base than top opening. add a squirt of dishwashing liquid and then add some dry ice. you then need to pour in some hot water to melt the ice as this melts foaming bubbles will shoot up about 20 inches and then bubbles galore will run down the sides and out onto the table. My story behind it will be about Giving your heart to Jesus and the overflowing bubbly joy that he gives to pass on to others. I will be looking forward to seeing this on your site perhaps as a story and the whole science jargon explained along with it.

Comments:Thank you for taking the time to put together this 'Science Magic' site. I have been looking for this sort of thing for a long time. I do 'Gospel Magic' and I came across a routine using balloons and water. I used the effects to explain, during the written account of Creation, God also created "Unseen Laws" that always obey Him. Such as gravity, centrifical force, inertia, capillary attraction and such. Although I don't explain in depth (I don't know it all anyway!) The point is these things are all around us and we take them for granted, but they must have come from somewhere, or someone!! Anyway I got the urge to find other science 'lessons' to expand my 'bag of tricks', also the lessons that go with those tricks. You have provided me with both, I can work with these things and maybe even expand on them, thank you again. Mike Rogers

This is an area that needs attention, as many students find themselves conflicted between what they hear in chirch and what they hear in school. When these students reach highschool and college, often they lose faith. If God chooses me to write additional lessons, I will add to this site. However, I would love for others to submit their lessons, if they desire and that is a direction God is leading them. In His, Daniel

Comments:Bev, I agree that the message needs to be the miracle and not some manipulation of the circumstance like the 'stone soup' story from the childhood book. To that end, this is hard to address with science, as science experiments are not miracles. However, of the lessons on the site today, the one that comes to mind is Lersson 3: "Faith of a Mustard Seed". This lesson uses several miracle-like experiments, but then makes the point that only God can perform true miracles. This should bring home your point. Another angle you could take is to use the boy as an example of how God can use our gifts to make a much larger impact. For this, I suggest the windbag experiment from Lesson 4: "This Little Light of Mine". Thus, simple generosity of one child provided for all, similar to how one person can inpact others on matters of faith, is enhanced by God for His purpose, evangelism. In the end, there are probably several experiments from the site you could use by simple tweaking to m

Do you have any ideas for using science and relating it to this particular Scripture?

Comments:Hello, I just used the balloon expermient today and it was great. The kids paid attention, and I had covered the fall today, and since we see that death and hell came to all human kind from only 1 sin of man, I used the flame to represent judgement, and said that if we have even just one sin, just one time we lied, hated, stole, etc. then when we pass before judgement it is death and hell for us. Then used the water filled balloon to explain by confessing and forsaking our sins and putting our trust in Jesus, we have his righteousness on our account and the ballon didn't pop. So that was great. Comments:I'm only leaving this comment because how can you beleive in something that says a single guy or entity, whatever you would like to call it, made everything within the span of seven days. So does that mean someone like Samantha from Bewitched basically made everything with magical powers. When I am to understand that christians don't beleive in magic. But if what you say is true then god made evil also. Were did Lucifer get his bad thoughts from to even begin to be jealous of god. If thats the case were did that thought come from because the way it is explained god created evil also. So why would he do that if it was such a perfect world? Please I would like to continue this discussion. Thank you for taking the time out to read this.

There are many other lessons online that may serve your purpose and be more budget friendly. Use the recommended links from my site for more websites. Overall, though, I wanted to thank you for you kind comments, as well as letting me know how much you have used the lessons. Truth be told, I have spent quite a bit of money, time and energy on these lessons for the kids in my church as well as development and running the website. Knowing that any of these lessons extend beyond my church makes me feel that the effort really was for His purpose all along. In His service, Daniel

Comments:Laurie, "I have phenolthalein and I think I can substitute ammonia as a base. This has worked in my health class." I am a bit confused here. The lesson calls for sodium sulfite, which is a decolorizing agent in addition to a base. In the first reaction, the starch and iodine combine to make a black precipitate. In the second reaction, the phenolthalein reacts with the sodium sulfite to turn pink (base). Both these would work with ammonia in place of the sodium sulfite. However, while the vinegar would offset the pH of the ammonia and return the color from pink back to clear, I cannot see that the ammonia would not decolorize the black precipitate. This experiment took me quite a while to figure out, as everything I found online did one or the other reactions. I made them fit together. In the end, if you want to perform this experiment, the only subsitutes I have for the sodium sulfite are Oxyclean and bleach, both of which I have not tried. If possible, I would stick to th

Comments:Laurie, As for the sand, craft stores sell colored sand (even Walmart has it). This is not described as waterproof, but the sand is actually somewhat waterproof already. This sand problem (getting somewhat wet) may even exist even if you make it at home (it will be hydrophobic in the water and remain as small snake-like projections in the water, but will get somewhat wet, so when you pour the water off it may not be as dry as you hoped). The 'magic sand' as sold online is the best, as you can actually pour the water off of it and it will remain dry. You may need to let the budget make the decision. Remember, it is the bible lesson that outweighs the science!!! Daniel

Science can be fun, albeit dangerous :) I do not have any lycopodium powder or sodium acetate trihydrate on hand. Sorry. You could skip the the waterproof sand part of the lesson or substitute it for another experiment (see guestbook response) if you are unable to make it fit the budget. As for the sodium acetate trihydrate, I actually recommend getting 500g if you never played with this before, as you will find that the material is pretty unstable and thus will require extra for the lesson (you need to start the lesson with it being a liquid - one bump can set it off to a solid). This can get pretty pricy (I know as I personally pay for all these lessons out of my own pocket). I wish I had a better response, but I truly wrote these lessons with the spiritual message in mind for the kids in my church not the cost for future mad scientists. Sorry. As for

While I do not have a bible lesson to go with this experiment yet, I can tell you the gist of how to do it. Take a bottle (Snapple) and hardboil and peal an egg just larger than the mouth of the bottle. Light a match and drop it in the bottle. Then, immediately put the egg on the mouth of the bottle. The vacuum created by the hot air escaping will pull the egg into the jar. If anyone has a good lesson for this experiment, please let us know. In His Service, Daniel

As for leadership lessons, I have yet to write one that specifically focuses on that concept. But it is a good suggestion. In fact, when I did a quick search I was unable to find one online, so the need is real. I am open to suggestions for experiments. In the mean time, you could change the lesson with experiments already on this site. For example, you could use the "transform and evalgelize" lesson to show what a single person, a single leader, can do for all (one crystal can lead others to change form, lead them to Christ). You could also use the windbag experiment from "this little light of mine" to show the effect of many rather than just the one; only when the leader directs the others to blow at once does the bag fill. Hope these initial ideas help. I will continue to think about it. Should I come up with others I will post them here. In His S

I can tell you that fog will not help the power, but will improve your aim. The trick is that the air-zooka forms a ring, not a ball, so only the outside of the ring will knock it off heads (this becomes visible with the fog added). The further away, the wider the ring becomes. I would also do this trick indoors, as wind is not your friend here. Daniel

As for your questions, lycopodium powder is sometimes difficult to find. I found mine on Ebay, but have not had success finding it recently. I paid less than $20 for mine, but I am aware that this product can be expensive. I would try a general search online. You are looking for the powder, not health tablets. Often these are sold for another experiment (grain mill explosion), so you could try this as a search as well. If you are unable to find some, I suggest using an alternate experiment for that part of the lesson or simply using only two experiments. One alternate experiment is often called "walking through an index card". Check out http://krampf.com/experiments/ for this or other ideas or contact me again (I have a list of unused experiments that may work . . . I just do not have the list handy). As for the air-zook

Not even sure it was the right product and I certainly can't pay that much. Do you have a link for another place that carries it? Any information on this would be helpful. Theme: let your light shine; don’t hide it by trying to be cool. Only the light of Christ can change the world. I started by giving the kids some string and a hand full of UV beads from Steve Spangler’s website. I had them make a necklace with it then I moved on to the lesson. (Because there were no windows in the room the beads remained white. I moved onto the lesson. I talked about the light of Christ and the scriptures like you are a lamp into my feet and a light unto my path. I talked about how the world is a dark place full of spiritual dangers and the only way for someone to see what is in front of them was with the light of god shining thru them. I turned off the lights and showed them what it is like in a dark place. Enter the light sticks (I also turned on a black light that I placed on the table for effect.

Comments:Hi! God just led me to your website and I'm so excited! I am a science teacher at a public school, but I do a lot of teaching at church. I can't wait to try some of your lessons...I really think the kids will love them. Your site has been added to my favorites. Thank you!
